Date: 2018-04-17

Since the rise of the Internet, an upsurge of commercial reform has been set off at an unprecedented rate. In the past, the building of a business magnate needs decades or even hundreds of years, but now it only takes a few years relying on the Internet.

Unicorn was originally the term of the American venture capital industry. It was used to describe startups with a valuation of more than 1 billion US dollars. At the beginning, these companies primarily developed based on software, but have gradually involved industries in other fields. In March 2017, the "Report on the Development of China Unicorns in 2016”released by the Torch Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Great Wall Institute of Enterprise Strategic Research defined the concept of Chinese Unicorn, which should meet the criteria as follows: registered in China, with legal personality; established for less than ten years; received private equity investment and not yet listed; with a valuation of over 1 billion US dollars. As of March 2018, there were 126 unicorn companies in China, distributed in 15 industries in 10 cities, with a total valuation of 625.3 billion US dollars, which is about RMB 4 trillion yuan. Unicorn companies often lead the development of industries in new forms. They develop themselves and also promote the development of their upstream and downstream industries and even cross-border industries to boost the regional economy and provide a strong support for new economy.

Since the beginning of the spring semester of 2018, the special course of the Department of Finance - “Finance and Entrepreneurship Frontier Forum” has launched the “Unicorn Founder Series Lectures” based on the new hot spots of capital market and strong influence of professors of the department. On April 19, the Department of Finance invited Mr. Zeng Bin, co-founder and president of Missfresh, to visit the University and give a lecture entitled “Thinking and Practice of Near Field Retail”. Missfresh has received C+ round financing of 230 million US dollars from Tencent, etc. Zeng Bin, co-founder of the company, has extensive experience in the operation of fresh food e-commerce.     Currently, "unicorn" founders are talents earnestly sought by global exchanges and local governments in China. Spreading the concept of finance and creating a surge of entrepreneurial activity, the “Finance and Entrepreneur Frontier Forum”- special course of the Department of Finance adheres to the curriculum concept of advancing, hard working, pioneering and innovation, and invites unicorn founders to give lectures in the University, providing teachers and students with great convenience to get close contact and face-to-face communication with unicorn founders for the understanding of entrepreneurial process. The Department of Finance holds an open attitude and welcomes peer schools (departments) to recommend "unicorn" founders to participate in the series of lectures.
